Description

This is the historic heart of the freedom struggle that took place in South Africa. Soweto (or 'SOuth WEst TOwnships') is replete with schools, squares, cemeteries and other memorials that carry now-famous names. Both ex-President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have homes here. It is recommended that visits to Soweto are undertaken via a reputable firm, for reasons of security. Tour operators offer a variety of packages, most including the Soweto Shebeen (local drinking houses) Route, which allows one a genuine taste of the warm hospitality that fills life in the township. Never dull, this township offers the wonderful experience of seeing how past incidents have impacted on the lives of residents today.

Dangerous

I would not recommend that you go here. It may be insightful but it is also dangerous. Unless it is some guided tour i think it is a silly idea to go by yourself. There are plenty of safer places in Johannesburg that would be worth your time and money. Soweto is not one of them.

It was terrible, the service was poor, the employees were disrespectful, and the building was very humid and stuffy. It was a horrible experience which i hope never to go through again.

I miss it, too!

I agree with the last review! We too had a guide and while it is very unsettling at times, we were perfectly safe at ALL the places we visited. I took my daughter last year and I will return with my son next month!

To the last review: all you have to do is stay in a group and you will be fine. I felt unsafe too, but if you actually meet the people that live there, you will find that they are the friendliest people on the planet.... and they love getting their picture taken :) p.s. my church group made balloon animals for the kids and handed them out.... they were all extremely grateful and couldn't thank us enough for such a simple task.

I disliked the exagerrated efforts put into security because we were unable to mingle with the natives who seemed like really friendly people but the overall experience was splendid!!!

you can see the changes in progress the government is making. our guide and especially our driver were very informative.we also visited the church

Awesome place

Loved it there. Loved the people. If you want to experience it the best way, go by yourself. Most people are willing to help if you are nice to them. Most people outside of South Africa have different opinions about Soweto, but when you get there and meet the people you will love it. There is alot to learn from the people there. I enjoyed the 6 months i spent there.

Insightful

It was a very insightful tour. We visited the house that Nelson Mandela's lived in prior to and right after he came from jail. We visited the Regina Mundi church and we at Wandies a great restaurant. The highlight for me was the Hector Pieterson Museum. There was so much history about the Soweto Rising that we didn't have enough time to read it all. The museum gives a detailed description of the event and makes you imagine being there. The information was gut wrenching and heavy but it made you admire the kids that placed their lives on the line to change the history of South Africa.
