The zoo is located on 24 hectares and specializes in the breeding of rare, endangered and seldom seen wildlife of a variety of sizes. The collection of wildlife on show at the zoo comprises well over 200 species and around 1,500 specimens. AWESOME
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/21/12
I liked the zoo, because I saw different types of animals. My favourite animal of the day was the Tiger. The animals are healthy and happy, and the staff are very friendly. If you ask questions, staff are available to help you. I will go back to visit the Zoo again. It was a great family day.

Tygerberg zoo in need of help
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/3/12
This zoo was once a beautiful well kept place. My hubby and I visited there in 2007 and we took many beautiful photos there. Today we took our son there to see the animals and were shocked at how the place has deteriorated in 3 years. Bush grows everywhere and cages are rusted. We were very sore to say the least. I read that the zoo owner died in 2010 and some posts said the zoo owners wife is struggling to maintain the zoo. I think we must all do our parts too and visit more. I will be taking my son there a few more times as despite the state of the zoo e was fascinated by the tigers and white lions. Please Eats all do our parts in keeping our only zoo alive.

Sad Tygerberg Zoo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/3/12
As per all the other reviews, i agree!!! The place is sad and the animals are treated with absolute disrespect in terms of their enclosures, no stimulation, etc etc. We have reported them to the SPCA, Carte Blanche, Zoological Soceity of South Africa, Animal Rights Africa and spoken to them personally! Something has to be done!! Staff actually encouraged us to complain to the SPCA, staff even told us that Mrs Spencer hardly walks around the cages anymore and does way too much shopping!!!! Nice! When my sister complained about the conditions of the rabbits, Mrs Spencer told her that if people like her didnt dump rabbits on her doorstep..... blah blah blah and then told her to shut up and slammed the phone down!! Maybe once upon a time it was a lovely zoo, but they need to sell it to people that will use the high entrance fees for what they are intended!!!! The animals! Our zoo should be something to be proud of!!!!!!

Tygerberg Zoo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/29/11
Am taking my kids to the zoo for a second time today . They enjoyed a lot the first time around and begged us to go back . As to all the people out there complaining about the conditions at our zoo , maybe you should stop complaining about it and stick your hand into your pockets and help the owners of the zoo to maintain it financially . Really , if you do not ,you are a hippocrate with no foot to stand on .. Come people , stop complaining and start doing . Or else keep your opinion to yourself and stop trying to chase people that want to help away ..

What a pleasant surprise !
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/19/11
Our family visited the zoo over the weekend. The animals are all happy, healthy and well cared for. A lovely variety of different animals in well kept habitats. The zoo is clean, and the staff very friendly and informative. The negative reviews does not do the zoo any justice at all. Definately worth a visit !

Lets help tygergerg zoo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/14/11
Hi All I agree with so much about how terrible tygerberg zoo is, I see so many people have complained about the zoo, but i was thinking after reading all your coments, why do we try and do something abut this propblem, contact business on the zoo's behalf to try and get sponsers to help them renovate the zoo and make it a better living enviroment for the animals, so it can be a tourist attacting again. You can imagine the expenses for running a zoo must be crazy, and i don't agree on how those animals are being living, I took my boy their once and he kept saying to me shame, so i wont be taking him back. So lets all try and do something to change it so people will want to start going back to the zoo again.

I think we can go back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/4/11

Rediculously overpriced and horrible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/22/11
We took our litle girl to the zoo yesterday and were so disappointed to say the least. The first half of the walk through the sandy pathways was a total waste of time as all the animals were hiding inside. It was a very hot day so maybe I can' blame them. The water holes in the predators enclosures were empty so perhaps they were dying of thirst like we were. We decided to buy some cooldrinks from the restaurant but we were out of cash as our entrance fee was R150 for 2 adults and 1 child. At the crazy price of R12 a can of Coke we decided to get out of that place and head for a restaurant nearby for lunch. Don't waste your money at this place it is horible. Janine

Lets Help SAVE TYGERBERG ZOO
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/8/11
Still one of my all time favourites to visit, sadly Tygerberg ZOO like most institutions is suffering financially to make ends meet with little to no assistance. Mr Spencer passed a away a year ago, he was Famous for his much loved tea time with the Chimpanzees! Mrs Spencer is struggling to uplift and manage the Zoo. Her love of animals is evident as I saw her twice doing her rounds looking to see that all was well within the Zoo. She has raised many of the animals like the BIG Cats herself. I visited today ( tuesday..which was quiet) and although the place needs some paint etc...I was impressed with the quality and variety of the food being fed to the animals in particular the monkeys got a assortment of fruit and veg. the zoo keepers very friendly. The cages were freshly swept and cleaned as well as the walk ways. All the animals were in a healthy condition. Under the circumstances she has done remarkably well. As our only affordable Family Zoo we should all try and assist her in keeping one of Cape towns treasures open.! There are many causes out there ..but Charity begins at home!
