Zandwijk Wine Farm
Description
In 1689, Willem van Wyk settled on a tract of land nestling on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. As a farmer, he was a dismal failure and it was only in 1742 when the farm was sold to Jacobus Bosman that real development of Zandwijk began. Bosman bought the farm as a young man, owning a horse and two male slaves. At the time of his death in 1782, he left his family a well-developed wine farm. By the time Cape Gate (Pty) Ltd discovered Zandwijk in 1983, it had changed hands 22 times and fallen into disrepair, producing only table grapes and plums. However, the farm was ideally situated and in an elegant setting for the creation of superior kosher wines. Today, Israeli-trained winemakers produce top quality kosher wine.
