Africa Nova is an elegant store dealing largely in Kudhinda (the Shona word 'to stamp'), an attractive, locally produced, hand-made fabric. This beautifully decorated shop has as its centerpiece the original solid wood postal counter. Local artists' works are on display, and there is a good selection of jewelery and bead work. The store is involved in the Christmas Africa Project, whereby local Mandela Camp residents produce Christmas decorations.
An artist friend recommended I visit Africa Nova while in Cape Town, so I decided to check it out. What a fabulous experience. I was overwhelmed with the beautiful displays of contemporary and tribal art. I thought the prices were quite reasonable, owner and staff courteous and helpful. I came away with quite a few beautiful purchases.
Unique collection of the best African Art. . This has the best selection of reasonably priced pieces that would enhance any interior back home. Mixed contemporary to traditional tribal art that support local artists but they select the best. Prices are fair and the owner is great with shipping back home. We live in San Francisco and have ordered other pieces. Owner will e-mail pics of interested items and shipping is abreeze. The shop is chock full of items on display and they have a strong following. And can get busy. For the high maintenance person who was talking about attitude, well cat calling the kettle black. These are good people who are about the art, social justice and they have a very in demand business. I don't think they need to bow down to high maintaine people who want a special deal and special service. There is a different vibe in this high end art district and it's relaxed and friendly.
The items are great but come with attitude. The owner of the shop is really rude, does not value customer service and treats her employees poorly. In our case, she refused to take down a huge bison skull from 12 feet up the wall that we decided to buy but wanted to inspect before hand. While there she also refused to take a downpayment from another customer and insisted in getting paid in full for an item that she was not sure she could ship internationally.
Nice items, but if you expect service to match the price tag (often $1000+), stay clear.
