Ou Pastorie, Cape Town

Imagine the priest tut-tutting disdainfully in a corner as you dine in comfortable old-fashioned style in a transformed Dutch Reformed church. The fare at Ou Pastorie is so good it has to be sinful. The high-ceilinged inter-linking rooms have deep pink walls and green-bordered plush carpeting, heavy-framed paintings, splashes of brass and copper and padded chairs. The red Roman lamb, braised with bacon and a three mustard sauce is good, but the slow-roasted breast and leg of duck, crisp and tender, served with a superb orange sauce, is simply sensational. The wines are a bit pricey by the bottle, so take your own or buy by the glass.
