Egyptian Museum

Description

Founded in 1858 by French archeologist Auguste Mariette (whose tomb is in the museum's garden), the giant salmon-colored building was built in 1902 under Khedive Abbas II Helmi. Housing one of the world's greatest collections of Egyptian artifacts, it boasts more than 136,000 artifacts from every period of pre-Islamic Egyptian history. It would be impossible to see everything in one go (allowing 60 seconds at each exhibit it would take nine months to see them all), so it is best to plan several visits if time allows. The exhibits on the ground floor are arranged more or less chronologically running clockwise with an ecclectic sample of Pharaonic highlights in the atrium. Don't miss the highly-lauded Amarna collection tucked away at the back. Upstairs are priceless treasures from the Tomb of Tutankhamun, the museum's crowning glory. Also on the top floor is the Mummy Room, which reopened in 1994 after years of controversy and contains the mummies of Egypt's mightiest Pharaohs.

brain over load

A buzzing yet personal place, this is a must. It's got so many treasures, you'll need a whole day to investigate, to give you an idea I spent 3 hrs alone on the top floor and about 2 again on the bottom, i recommend also getting a quick tour and pay the extra to visit the mummy rooms, they're interesting.

Awsome
By ,
Having visited Cairo in 1973 we found that the display was in London. Seeing it in 1990, having been in the tomb, 2 days earlier in the vally of the Kings, the display was more than we expected, no photographs or other representations can prepare you for the awesome majesty of the display, you are simply stuned into silance.

Amazing place but so disorganised
By ,
The Egyptian museum is one of the most amazing places to ever visit. It is completely packed with so much history that you get the impression that they don't know what to do with everything. It felt very disorganised, there were bits of artefacts here there and everywhere, but nothing seemed to be in order. Some areas were off limites and others weren't even labelled so you didnlt really know what you were looking at. You have to pay extra to visit the 'mummy room' and they advise you not to take small in as they may be frightened, but it is an amazing experience to see the few mummified bodies, quite eerie. Definately worth a visit but be prepared to wonder around in a daze.

Hire a guide! The museum is massive and you might walk past something really significant. This is a must visit stop on your tour.

Great museum, exploitation needs improvment
By ,
The place is gorged with amazing objects but most artefacts are not titled, dated or described. I rented an electronic audio guide but it was a total waste of money. Rare are the objects registered and the explanations are 1 to 4 sentences long and state obvious facts. The displayed cardboards are more fleshed out. Tour guides are available but most seemed to give approximate information. Cameras are not allowed inside, you have to check it before entering.

By ,
Wow what a site.Take plenty of pictures outside.Very nice outside.Get there two hours after it opens.Place is crowded when it first opens. Now this place has no A/C inside.Very dusty and the place is falling apart. This place needs to be completely renovated.Enjoy yourself and take your time walking around.
