Description
The capital of Egypt for thousands of years, little remains of this once great city to attest to its glory. Memphis was founded by the I Dynasty pharaoh Menes around 3100 BCE and destroyed after the Arab conquest in the 6th Century CE. Most of its treasures were looted or reused in other monuments and the sparse remains hardly warrant a special excursion. Worth seeing, however, is the colossal statue of Ramses II, alabaster sphinx of King Thutmose III and embalming slabs where the holy Apis bulls were mummified. Most of the artifacts have been gathered for display in a garden. A nominal admission fee is charged.
I took my wife to Cairo for our 40th Anniversary -- it was like being in a 3D postcard or an Indiana Jones movie. Nothing like we expected -- a lot of folks there speak English and the hotels actually have american style plumbing so don't waste your money on a chamber pot.
IT'S ASHAME HOW PEOPLE CAN DESTROY SOMETHING SO SACRED , SUCH AS THOSE BURIAL GROUNDS , REMOVE THE THE DEAD FROM THEIR TOMBS TO PUT ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUMS AROUND THE WORLD. SHAME,SHAME,SHAME
Contrary to what some people think the "vendors and opportunists" make the experience of Egypt more enjoyable. It is so disappointing to read that someone would travel to another country and complain about the culture of the native inhabitants.
So interesting to see up close what I had only seen in photos and movies. Did not realize that pyramid building was limited to a narrow time period. Street vendors and opportunists of all types mar the visitor's enjoyment of time spent there.
