Al Dente

Description

Inexpensive and cosy, this tiny restaurant in a quiet residential neighbourhood has a dedicated clientele of young Egyptians and ex-pats. With only six tables, Al Dente is positively miniscule. Rave reviews of the chef - who spent 15 years in Italy - fill one tiny wall. Fresh ingredients are laid out behind the counter and diners can watch the chef at work. Pasta is the specialty, and you can choose from spaghetti, fettucine, fusilli and penne, and then select one of 12 delicious sauces. Prices are incredibly cheap given the quality and large portions. The Al Veliero sauce (EGP 15) - a creamy blend of smoked salmon, shrimp and mushrooms - is out of this world. A small selection of fish and chicken dishes is also served, but alcohol is not.

Flaverful White Sauce
By Silver, 2/8/09
Located in Zamalack, easily to access. Well lit and clean.. Al Dente was a flaverfull experience. The White Sauce was probably the best Ive tasted. My dinner companion said it was probably due to the Egyptian milk or cream. (That thought did not set well, but nonetheless, the food was rather tasty). The pasta was perfect and Al Dente'. The dining area was small but the seating spaces were comfortable. Two things were not favorable, and that being the smoke was unbearable if more than a single smoker lit up, (I do not smoke but typically I'm not to put off by smoke) and the temperature in the room was high even tho this was less than 2 weeks ago, (still winter) that I last visited.

Dogs Dinner!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/27/08
The food is terrible and the service is juvenile -literally! Never trust a restaurant where you are served by kids who spend more time playing with the balls than serving. There is a reason the food is cheap! I would not feed my dog this! The pasta is overcooked and the sauce -watered down Uncle Bens boil in the bag. It's actually so overcooked one could use it as cement to fill in cracks. I ordered Putanesqua. It was indeed Putain! I have no idea why this place has a good reputation. The only people who eat there are embassy staff and they only eat there cause embassy food is worse! Don't go there if you like pasta or your health!

I loved everything about the place. The food was awesome and the service was exquisite! The only thing i didn't like is that the bathrooms in the resturand could have been a little bit bigger. Other than that it's my fav place!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MMMMMMM..... Yummy

Also in Maadi, a bigger place, 24/7
By Ahmad E, 6/12/06
This is my favourite restaurant all over Egypt maybe! Like all the other reviews, I'll repeat that they've got the best pasta, the cheapest prices, and the friendly satisfactory service. NOTE: the one located in Zamalek is small as you've read, however, there is another one located in Maadi, Al-Nasr st., where it is relatively bigger, and it's open for business 24/7, they also offer home delivery.

Don't miss this one!
By JayDub, 6/9/06
The food is great. Period. Some of the best Italian I've ever had. The prices are incredibly good. Two people with an appetizer, two meals and three drinks - $11 US. Al Dente is very hard to find. Even the locals don't know where it's at. I actually asked a policeman stationed across the street and he had no idea. The words Al Dente are very small on the building and I think it might also be called something else. Once there, you'll also be surprised how small it is. I'd be surprised if it can serve more than 25 people at a time. And the service is hurried and very disconnected, though the people were all genuinely nice. It can get very busy in that little place. The food is so good and such a great value, though, the other issues are insignificant. It's a great place for a date, too. Kind of cozy. This is a must-eat!

Friendly small place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/10/05
Wonderful place for casual dining, the place is so small but they make the best pasta in town with a really friendly atmosphere. The intresting thing is that the prices are so cheap.

Good Pasta, Great Prices
By BrandyP, 9/30/04
Al Dente has a good selection of pasta dishes, including several seafood entrees, with many under 15LE. Two locations, 26 Baghat Aly St. in Zamalek and 1 Road 270 & Al-Nasr St. in New Maadi
