Como Agua Para Chocolate
This restaurant, inspired by the book "Like Water for Chocolate", recreates a colourful Mexican ranch, with wrought iron railings on the balconies and plenty of wood, stone and exposed bricks. On the first floor there is a bed turned into a table. The solid wood tables, musical instruments and oil lamps, contribute to the romantic environment. The menu, consist of and almost entirely aphrodisiac selection, with dishes such as saffron choritos soup at CLP2,800, crunchy prawns in breadcrumbs with sesame and vinaigrette (CLP3,800) or "Veracruz" rice with squid rings, oysters and prawns, served in a coconut shell. The main courses are filling enough to leave one ready to take on a dessert, like sweet potatoes with custard and ice cream (CLP2,300). A good wine list - somewhat expensive- and a dozen different beers to choose from, complete the menu.
We had heard so many great things about this restuarant, and after gazing inside one day, decided to come back for dinner the next night. While the place was beautiful on the inside, the food left a LOT to be desired. Geared mostly to tourist( most of the people in there), the food lacked very little flavor. I have to say that the presentation was great, but did not make up for the lack of. Of the 18 days of eating out, this is one place that we would definately not return to or suggest to anyone. Very big dissapointment, from the drinks to the dessert.
For our final night in Santiago we enjoyed a fabulous meal with excellent service. The decor was colorful and the deep blue glassed ceiling was a work of art. We suggest arriving later in the evening. It wasn't a people-watching restaurant until after 10. The only negative comment would be the many smoking patrons.
This was one of the better meals I had in Santiago (July 04). The service was good and the atmosphere was comfortable. I recommend it. There were tasty vegetarian options. The presentation was muy bonita.
