Description
The Church of São Francisco de Paula is located in Largo de Sao Francisco de Paula and is one of the largest churches in the city. It is thought to be one of the best representations of the evolution of colonial architecture. It is also the historical site of several imperial events such as the mass in 1822 that was dedicated to the country's transformation from colony to kingdom and the 1831 mass celebrating Brazil's first constitution. The church contains sculptures by Mestre Valentim and paintings by the slave Manoel da Cunha.
