The most sophisticated and expensive Japanese restaurant in Rio, Madame Butterfly is a must for Japanese food lovers, and was elected best in its category by gourmet specialists. The food here is superb, and the highlights are the fish with shimeji mushrooms in ginger and sake sauce, the many different types of sushi and rolls with unusual shapes. The restaurant occupies two floors, with a dining room downstairs and reserved booths upstairs. Valet parking is provided.
Madame Butterfly is located on a nice street three or four blocks from the beach in Ipanema. Tables in this converted house are packed very closely together. Service is excellent. The food consists of genuine Japanese dishes as well as Japanese-Brazilian hybrids. I ordered shabu-shabu, my favorite dish, and willingly paid for a two-person portion. The quality of the beef -- crucial to this repast -- was outstanding.
