The waiters were very friendly and helpful, particularly for those of us who have limited Spanish speaking ability. However, our waiter did not speak a word of English. There is a menu available that is written in English.
We ordered a plate of various meats, including tripe, blood sausage, short ribs, chicken, and steak---we were being adventurous! I don't recommend it. We tried everything, and were very unimpressed. The chicken, although very tender, was almost without any flavor. The steak was very tough and also had hardly any flavor. The rest, I don't ever need to try again.
The cost was great, however. We also ordered a mixed salad for two, a plate of pasta for our daughter (which was enough for two adults), a bottle of wine, two after-dinner drinks, and dessert, and the bill was under 40 U.S. dollars.
La Estancia is one of my favorites in Buenos Aires. It is located on the energetic pedestrian street Lavalle, and the energy from outside seamlessly transitions into the restaurant. The prices are good (quite cheap for foreigners) and the food is excellent. I recommend trying chivito...you won't be disappointed!
One possible criticism is the service at La Estancia, but my experience could be unique, and possibly misinterpreted. I went to La Estancia twice with my wife, and the service was really excellent...second to none. Another time, however, I went with my wifes family, all native porteos. We were all speaking Spanish at the table, and I noticed a marked drop off in the quality of service...I got the feeling that foreign tourists may be treated better than locals. However, this could just have been one rude waiter.
Overall, I highly recommend La Estancia as a wonderful establishment in the heart of Buenos Aires.
