It pays to start the day with a hearty breakfast, and this is the place to get it. Only a few minutes from Cathedral Square, this air-conditioned, American-style diner serves all-day breakfasts and boasts cubicles seating four people each. The service is of the fast, no-nonsense variety. Visiting lumberjacks can tuck into a Drexel's Special (NZD14.90) of eggs, hash brown, toast, bacon or ham or sausage, and pancakes or French toast. The Farmers Breakfast (NZD14.90) includes eggs, beef hash, bacon, sausage and tomato. Egg fans can get them any style (NZD6.10-NZD18.40), while pancake lovers can hoe into thick, luscious stacks (NZD4.80-NZD13.70). Toast is included with all meals.
Nothing to dislike about this place apart from the queues if you're unlucky enough to arrive at the wrong time. Luckily for us there was a table ready on both occasions when we visited. The first time was on a recommendation and the second time was a must as it was so good the first time. The french toast is superb. They dont mind giving you too much food either! The prices arent cheap but its money well spent. Enjoy. By the way, if you miss the 6.00 am flight to Sydney, go back and have breakfast at Drexels - there will be plenty of parking right out front !! It makes you feel a whole lot better!
Loved the food but had to wait for coffee several times.
Didn't like sitting in the middle as we could overhear the conversation on the other side. Will make sure there are at least three of us next time so we can sit on the side. A glass petition down the middle would help to mask the sound of the diners on the other side.
A Christchurch/European take on a US diner. Fruit salad not out of a can (great!) but would be better if the bread was not your usual Wonderloaf. Muesli good but not outstanding. However, overall very good value.
There really wasn't anything to dislike about the restaurant, the food was good, and the staff were excellent.
I am a kiwi living in London, I come home every year and have done so for the last 5 years at least.
I always bring my nieces to Drexels as a thank you for putting up with me (!!!) and if I do not make the offer they start giving hints. (cheeky devils)
I love the Drexel special and so does my waistline but hey what a way to go.
