Tanuki's Cave (Yakitori)
Below the Tanuki Sushi and Sake Bar is Tanuki's Cave. This, quite separate establishment, serves up informal Yakitori and Kushiage style food at very reasonable prices. A basic Dom Buri costs NZD8.50 and skewers of grilled and barbecued meat and vegetables (Yakitori), and meat and vegetables dipped in egg and breadcrumbs then cooked in soya oil (Kushiage), can be added for around NZD3 each. There is a small wine list and lots of Japanese beer and sake on offer, ensuring an interesting and fun night out.
I lived in Tokyo for 5 years and am always searching for a taste of "home." These guys have it all right. Comments about food arriving at different times is based on misunderstanding of dining in Japan. Places like this are like tapas - you eat a little, drink a little, eat a little more, etc. Nobody actually orders a "meal" - you all share everything and order more of anything you like in particular.
i love tanuki's cave ! you should deffinitly go there. It's now a real favourite and im there so often i think i know all the staff by name !!!
it's GREAT value for what you get. The place is a clean, friendly and has a buzzing atmosphere. The only negative aspect is that when it's busy your food will be delivered to you out of time with the person your dining with..so often you might be waiting up to 5-6 mins for the other persons meal or the rest of yours.
young group serving plenty of good saki. service typical of a dive full of culture and not tourists. not five star, but the character of the place more than makes up for it. sushi upstairs is excellent.

This Brazilian style eatery is operated by one of Auckland's longest established restaurateurs. The centrepiece of the dining room and
