O'Connell Street Bistro
The O'Connell Street Bistro is the perfect place for an intimate tete-a-tete. It is a small, sophisticated fine dining restaurant with just a few tables. The menu is mostly contemporary cuisine and changes regularly to accomodate new tastes. Desserts in particular are outstanding. Prices are above average, but excellent service and fare is assured. Bookings are recommended, especially during lunch hours and early evening.
6 of us ate there twice whilst on a recent tour of new zealand. We ate well throughout our 3 week trip, but we found nowhere better than this. It is a prime example of how to run a restaurant; the owner, chris upton, was omnipresent; answered the phone, dealt with bookings, advised on the menu, and eating elsewhere in n z, and generally was the perfect host. His chef is top class and produced food of the finest quality, including some items such as veal sweetbreads, which we did not find elsewhere on tour. His staff are unfailingly charming, giving helpful advice, and generally we were left with the impression was that this was how a small top quality restaurant should be run.
I visited this restaurant in April of 2004 after reading about it in the NY Times. The review was dead-on: nice intimate space with about 20 tables covered in paper in lieu of tablecloths. It was filled with locals - few if any tourists...I might have been the only one! They have a great selection of New Zealand wines and the lamb shank was excellent!
