Spit to Manly

Description

If you are lucky, your walk may begin with the magnificent sight of the Spit Bridge opening to let through passing boats. One of Sydney's best foreshore walks, the clearly marked track can be busy at weekends. This long walk offers spectacular views, varied landscapes and the chance of spotting a water dragon. The trail will lead you across Sandy Bay, past Clontarf, up to Castle Rock, then on into the National Park. Allow at least five hours to reach Manly - take plenty of water with you - and enjoy a ferry ride back to Circular Quay .

Long Walk to Nowhere
By MAG2009, 2/17/09
The scenery was beautiful and free. I walk from the Manly Ferry to the Spit Bridge and took several of the side trails. While in the national park area, I only saw a handful of people but the closer I got the bridge the more congested it became. My only problem was they were doing construction near the Spit Bridge so I had trouble finding the bus stop. I would recommend just walking the section through the national park.

Beautiful

Great jog, beautiful views, cool in summer :) You can finish with a Pic nic at the Spit Bridge or a meal at one of the restaurants.

Good, but there is one Better!
By Thomas, 5/23/05
Although this is a fine walk, and anyone touring should take the trek. The better walk, and possibly one of the most beautiful walks in the world, is the walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach. It's a 8k walk, but the scenery, beachs and views are tremendous. You can stop for a swim, snorkel and even lunch along the way. You can also walk south from Coogee to Maroubra, but the walk is not as long -- 3k. A must for visitors

Great Wilderness within a Great City
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/14/04
I took this walk last December and it was gorgeous! People who like to walk/hike will enjoy it. I got a little lost in the middle, but because you're basically going along the shore , you can find your way. I am usually in Sydney alone and this is a great thing to do if you are solo and take your time. A pic-nic breakfast isn't a bad idea and lots of water. Once you get to Manly you can have a well deserved lunch in one of the many restaurants and enjoy the surf and shops. I'm going back to Sydney tonight and plan to do it all over again! Enjoy!

Amazing scenery!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/25/04
On my first day in Sydney, I planned on doing the Spit to Manly walk. I was staying in Balgowlah. It's an amazing trek through a variety of terrain around the area. Starting from the Spit brdige, you begin in a park. Then you go into residential, then a beach/park, then lush bush tropical, then quaint residential neighbourhoods, then picturesque beaches, then arid sparse bush, then residential, etc... Once you arrive in Manly, you start seeing more civilisation. You encounter and endless stream of beach-side restaurants by Manly Wharf. It's a fairly strenuous hike with a lot of steep terrain that constantly goes uphill and downhill. The beaches and the boat moorages are beautiful. It's like one of those pictures you see of old beach houses. A lot of the beaches are pretty isolated. The final destination, Manly, is truly an exciting one. There a lot of great restaurants in the area. There is The Walk, which wide footwalk from Manly Wharf to Manly Beach (they are on opposite ends of the peninsula). Each side of the footwalk are restaurants and shops waiting to be explored. It has a great atmosphere. Try the Ribs and Rumps for great steak! Check out Oporto for an authentic Bondi burger! Then there's Manly beach itself! It's a long with plenty of surf, volleyball, and fun to be had. I highly recommend this walk. The both the trip and the destination are not to be missed!
