Hyde Park Barracks Museum
An elegant, Georgian building designed by the convict architect, Francis Greenway, Hyde Park Barracks Museum is located in one of Sydney's most historic precincts. Until 1848, it provided accommodation for convicts but has since had many occupants becoming sequentially an Immigration Depot for Irish orphans and unprotected females, an Asylum and law courts. The sensitive interpretation acknowledges these various, historical usages while a new exhibition on convicts has opened recently. The shop and Barracks Cafe complement the visitation experience.
It was wonderful to see historic buildings used for several purposes. Walking through the three stories, you can see excavated artifacts and archives, interact with touch screens to check your family's convict past, walk through reconstructed galleys of ships and see how closely the immigrants slept in the tiny hammocks. I would definitely go back there again and again for the changing exhibit.
Very interesting way to spend an hour (or two). Not much in the way of interactive exhibits, but there's a lot of the history stripped back (literally) and lots of the construction detail of the building on show. The exhibits give a good sense of atmosphere of the long history of the barracks. Unlike the brain-dead, barely-literate other reviewer who, no doubt, in an earlier life would have been one of the barrack's long term residents, my party found the experience interesting and worthwhile. P.S. The latte is good in the cafe!
