Cave of Altamira (The), Santillana del Mar

The Cave of Altamira or the Cueva De Altamira is a cave in Santillana del Mar, it is renowned for its paleolithic paintings. The cave features polychrome rock paintings of animals like bison, horses, deer, hands and some mysterious signs. Found in 1879, by an amateur archaeologist Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, the cave came under the scrutiny of acclaimed archaeologist and was later declared as a World Heritage Site. Managed by the Museo De Altamira , today the caves are open for a limited period of time in the year and only a small group of individuals, hence it becomes imperative to make the according reservations.
