It is no wonder that this cool, minimalist space poised on a pier in Rose Bay's Lyne Park is one of Sydney's best, award winning restaurants. Catalina's harbour views and ambience are hard to beat; the open French windows provide a sea breeze and the sound of water lapping. The perfect setting for well-heeled locals and visitors. The specialty is seafood, including salmon smoked on the premises, scallops and oysters.
Great food, wonderful wines and when the weather is perfect, a stunning place to spend a long lunch overlooking the water on a sunny day as lunch runs on into dinner.
The menu and wine list are quite expensive but we found the quality of food and wine to be outstanding. The other guests were tables of loud, laughing ladies doing lunch and businessmen starting what looked like a long afternoon as well as a few other couples in conversation. Pelicans flew round the deck but didn't join us this time as they sometimes do and the seaplanes landing and lifting off may be noisy but is fun to watch.
With a good mix of fresh seafood and meat dishes the menu had a great selection for entree, main and dessert - everything we ordered was delicious. The wine list is extensive including some European vintages and more cost effective bottles can be found, but don't go to save pennies, go when you want a great dining experience, good food and are willing to push the boat out. A warm sunny day lets you get on the deck (when there's space) but the view vanishes as night falls.
