Old Japanese Farm Houses Museum
Description
Opened in 1960, this is Japan's first open-air museum of old farmhouses. On the site are reconstructed farmhouses from different parts of Japan, including Iwate (the northernmost prefecture of Honshu) and Amami-oshima Island (to the south of Kyushu). Among the 11 farmhouses on display is an "important tangible folkloric cultural asset" that was originally located in Hida-Shirakawa. This house is known for its "gassho-zukuri" roof, which is shaped to resemble two hands joined in prayer. All the houses in the museum date back to the Edo Period (1603-1867).
