Convento de San Juan Bautista
Description
The Franciscan monastery was founded in 1610 by Juan de Mancisidor, secretary of Felipe II, but was not occupied until the work was completed in 1617. The development comprises the church, with its Latin cross layout, and the monastery, which is separated by a courtyard. Over the years it has endured disasters and undergone renovations. In 1794 it was plundered by the French army during the War of the Convention, which resulted in the loss of many relics brought from Flanders and donated by the founder. In 1959 major renovation work was undertaken, with the church's nave being extended and the construction of the present facade. At the gate there is an interesting reproduction of a carved cross.
