Les Remparts (Fortified Walls)
Description
Les Remparts or the Fortified Walls of Provins are an incredible example of medieval architecture, serving as an enduring reminder of the importance and prosperity of this city during the Middle Ages. The walls were built between the 11th and 13th centuries to protect the town from the Kings of France, and many of the towers (such as the Swine and Engines towers) are still standing strong. The grand Royal gates porte de Jouy and porte Saint-Jean were constructed after the walls, in the time of Philippe le Bel's reign during the 15th century. An intensive restoration process has been under way since the 1970's, and after years of hard work the magnificent Jouy Gate has been restored to its former glory.
