Night Cat (The)
With the opening of The Night Cat in 1994, Melbourne's cafe culture finally came of age. It is a fusion of a comfortable lounge atmosphere, an elegant meeting place, complete with dance floor and sophisticated music that will have many people toe tapping and dancing to styles of music they would not usually listen to. Friday and Saturday nights are particularly busy and you may have to queue. On Sunday evenings an older, local crowd descends, creating a real community feel. The large bar serves basic drinks, house beer and wine. Focaccias and cakes are also available.
not expecting a big night out but with it being my first weekend in melbourne my new friends dragged me out to night cat....they had to drag me back out kicking and screaming it was such a great night!
Top quality, professional live music on a sat night with no cover charge...the night cap is a real gem of a find in the city..i will be sure to return and did so the follwoing night for the salsa lessons which where equally fab and well worth the $15...these hips could be hiting a salsa club near you soon!
in the night cat, it had a great atmosphere and unbelievable music. the staff were talkative at the bar and if you got tired from dancing, the hip lounge set up was a great place to rest, drink and chill out... loved it will be there again soon
It can be difficult to find sophisticated nightclub scenes in the Melbourne area. Most places cater to the young rave crowd who want a blaring dance thump DJ or canned heat from an unmanned techno box. However, if you like your atmosphere a bit more intellectual with enough drive in the music to keep your attention then the Night Cat may be for you. One of the rare places in the Melbourne area where you can find a good live band, the Night Cat goes beyond the normal strides of Australian bar songs. It creates a bit of dash with a variety of musical styles all oriented to keeping you entertained but not overwhelmed. It is easy to sit back and have a conversation but you may find yourself mesmerized by the graceful sounds coming from the stage. Styles vary from Calypso or Fusion to Smooth Jazz but almost always present a solid interpretation of the music, depending on the artists.
When you're feeling like you want to do something energizing with a flair (but not get overwhelmed or mashed like a sardine) the Night Cat could be for you. It's one of our favorite spots...
