Donovans has been the darling of Melbourne restaurant reviewers in recent years, and not without good reason. The restaurant straddles the St Kilda beach promenade, bringing the relaxed beach lifestyle into the dining experience, particularly sublime for long, lazy lunches. The menu is like a lucky dip with a guaranteed winner every time. Try a four tastes selection (for those who cannot choose) AUD18, Queensland leader prawns grilled with chilli & oregano (AUD35.50) or Bombe Alaska dessert for two (AUD27)—an extravagant way to end the meal. A kids' menu is also standard. Donovans is fully licensed.
The chocolate souffle is to die for...we are 2 Canadians taking a break from the ice and snow and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We would recommend Donovan's to any friends who were visiting Melbourne area.
I visit Melbourne for business every couple of months from the USA. My collegues and I have made it a tradition to eat at Donovan's at least once while we are in Melbourne. We love to have a late lunch/early dinner, sit by the fireplace or outside by the beach to kill time before the jet lag kicks in! I travel extensively around the world and have to say this has to be my favorite restaurant by far...
We had an early Saturday lunch at Donovans before it became busy. The service was as outstanding as our food and wine. The view out to the water and the quiet, comfortable surroundings added to the enjoyment of our meal.
Both my pumpkin ravioli and the iceberg lettuce salad with blue cheese and walnuts matched the best I have had anywhere and at a price which makes this memorable lunch very good value.
This was my first visit to Donovans but I have no hesitation in highly recommending this restaurant.
It's unquestionably an attractive restaurant, but the food was less than mediocre. Meatless, overcooked prawns were the low point of the experience. My wife's fish had to have been dead for ages, replete with more bones than a British Museum exhibit of ancient water life. I think the pretension level here is way too high, and if Mr. Donovan is an ``icon'' of Melbourne restaurants, I'm King Henry VIII. Melbourne has a lot more to offer than this overrated, overpriced eatery.
