Alter Leuchtturm, LüBECK

Lubeck Bay isn't one of the world's most dangerous waters, but Alter Leuchtturm takes care of guiding ships safely at any time of day or night and in any weather. It's been like this for centuries. The lighthouse is certainly the oldest of its kind. Maybe the plain, cylindrical building doesn't look it, but it dates from 1539 and has shown sailors the way for more than 400 years. The top two floors were added in 1827, thus bringing the tower to a total height of 31 meters. The complete device is kept in operative condition and can be seen on guided tour, as it is the only one along the entire Baltic coast.
