Plaka Restaurant (The)
Offering popular dishes in comfortable surroundings, the Plaka has stood the test of time and is still a favourite haunt of locals and visitors alike. This is an unpretentious restaurant with old-style Greek decor and a friendly atmosphere. The menu features many popular mediterranean favourites including Dolmades, Souvlaki, Moussaka, Calamari, an excellent range of pastas, and a selection of seafood. Desserts include traditional chocolate baskets and strawberry tortes. Entrees are from AUD4-AUD16, mains from AUD14-AUD85 and desserts from AUD5-AUD8.
Plaka is a so-so restaurant in the unfashionable Mawson shopping centre. It has been around for years and enjoys a reasonable reputation in Canberra. My own experience about 6 months ago was indifferent, with a rather bored and inattentive waitress and food which was fairly much standard Greek / Mediterranean fare with a heavy emphasis on pizzas. Nevertheless, Plaka could be considered worth a visit as there is not alot of choice in that general area. However, I would not recommend a special trip as there are better value restaurants in Civic, Kingston, Manuka and Griffith.
