Lake Wivenhoe is in the picturesque Esk Shire, known as "Valley of the Lakes", is an hour from the northwest of Brisbane. Along with Lake Sommerset, it is the source of the Brisbane River, and affords great opportunities for camping, sailing, fishing, swimming, picnicking and bush walking. Activities in the area are not limited to the lakes either, sky-diving, hang-gliding and horse riding are available too, and a few places offer farm stays for weekends. There is accommodation nearby, and pubs, restaurants and bakeries to satisfy hungry stomachs.
wivenhoe dam is a dam that is loved by both locals and tourists alike. It's secluded park and magnificent views give the perfect place for a picnic. You can sit in the dam restarant and enjoy the view of the historic lake or out in the open cooking on the parks barbeques. Children are very welcome and can enjoy bushwalking around the lake, climbing on the playground or going koala searching (koala searching is best in the afternoon when they are waking up). You can also go canoeing, swimming, fishing and camping all down the nearby river twin bridges which offers views of a large quantity of wildlife like turtles, platypus, birds and fish. And the best bit is that it is all free.
