1918 Bistro and Grill
The 1918 Bistro, with its charming cottage setting, has been a huge success since the day it opened. Always innovative, the restaurant presents a varied menu of fine local foods. Naturally, here in the heart of the Barossa Valley, you will also find a great wine selection. But if you have stumbled across a real gem at one of the many nearby wineries, you are welcome to enjoy it with your meal--subject to a small corkage charge.
We ate at this restaurant on Melbourne Cup Day. Everyone in Australia was celebrating! It was still light outside after a warm day. Some tables were set on the lawn in front of the restaurant and diners were beginning to gather. We sat just under the eaves at a table along the wall in this wonderfully restored house right next to the Jacob's Creek arch. The food was magnificent and the ambience matched!
We started with a cream of broccoli soup with blue cheese and toasted walnuts. Then we had one of the best Caesar Salads I've ever eaten! For the main course, my husband had lamb shanks that fell off the bone. I had sea trout which tasted like Pacific Salmon. Both entrees were delicious. We finished with decaf lattes and a chocolate pudding cake with almond ice cream. I had a delightful sparkling pinot chardonnay and Don had the Grant Runge Merlot. Both were excellent.
I recommend this restaurant for food lovers. Dinner was not fast (ours took about two hours) so it might not do if you have children with you. It was definitely worth the time and the money. The best meal we had in the Barossa Valley!
