Jackson State University's 131-acre campus is a short drive from downtown, located in the southwest corner of the city. Established in Natchez in 1877, the campus was moved to Jackson in 1882 and eventually came under state sponsorship in 1940. Founded to train newly freed slaves and prepare them for life after bondage, the school today is devoted to the pursuit of personal enlightenment, scientific research and cultural development. The school's Tigers compete in many intercollegiate sports, and their "Sonic Boom" marching band has been acclaimed worldwide.

A MUST DO!
By Porsha W, 09/25/07
Do not get deterred from the bad surrounding neightborhood...JSU is THE PLACE TO BE! I would make a HUGE effort to go on a Saturday during football season and YOU MUST GO A JSU TIGERS FOOTBALL GAME! It is truly outstanding to see the amount of support these guys get from everyone in the city and we will flock WHEREVER they play! Hearing the Sonic Boom (the baddest band in the land) will be a life changing experience I GUARANTEE YOU! Also, JSU is constantly expanding and building new additions to the already huge school. The food is AMAZING as well as every building you enter! There is ALWAYS something going on, be it a step show or a concert.

Love what you are doing with the campus!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/13/05
I visited the campus about five years ago. It was very old and run down. Upon my very recent return I realized that old buildings had been torn down and new ones are springing up everywhere. The campus looks great. My children will definitely go here.
