Seattle Public Library (The)
This downtown location is the hub for all of the Seattle Public Library branches, and it circulates more than a million books annually. It has a large computer area and a 200-seat auditorium where literary programs, workshops and events for kids are held (all free of charge). Other services include an area to assist deaf, deaf-blind and hard-of-hearing patrons, a genealogy desk for those researching family history, and a writer's room to encourage new writers.
Opened in Spring 2004, the Seattle Public Library (SPL) Central Branch is Seattle's finest architectural addition since the Space Needle pierced the sky back in 1962. (Forget the hype around Frank Gehry's EMP, which is nothing more than the pyrrhic triumph of form over function.) Open and airy, not only is the Rem Koolhaas-designed Central Branch an architectural wonder (a truly 21st century building), it also provides a crucial public service. "Admission" is free and, true to Seattle's nature, there is an espresso bar inside (with proceeds going to homeless aid programs). The top floor reading areas are a must-see, with high vaulted steel lattice and glass roof affording great views of Puget Sound and surrounding buildings and streets.
