Bill Speidel's Underground Tour

Description

Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood, and it wasn't always a pleasant place to visit. The Underground Tour takes visitors around Pioneer Square above ground and also to a hidden Seattle that now lies underground. About 25 square blocks of Pioneer Square have hollow spaces under the sidewalks, thanks to peculiarities of the reconstruction after the great Seattle fire of 1889. Cash and traveler's checks only are accepted. ATM is on-site.

Good Tour
This tour was very informative on the history of Seattle. How the city was burned and rebuilt, the sewer system, and the raising of the ground around the buildings.

Below the Ground is the Place to Be in Seattle!
By Patricia, 10/14/06
I went on my second tour of Seattle's Underground and, as always, it was fantastic!! The guides are so informative and FUN! Submarines may be fun, and under water is ok, but being under the streets of Seattle and learning about the "not so good guys(and gals)" who "developed" Seattle, is a special treat! Be sure to put it on your list of "must dos" when you are in Seattle! Pat Bates

Hilarious history!
By David, 9/29/06
Extremely well-informed tour guides provide charming ripostes during the 90 min tour and share graphic evidence of expansion at-all-costs ideas of founding elders. Museum at end of tour is an excellent overview of pioneer times in Pioneer Square and recovery conservation of area in late 20th century. Highly recommended.

Laugh out loud FUN
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/27/06
I had heard about the tour and was quight skeptical. HOWEVER the tour guides were a laugh riot, then made learning the history a FUN thing and then backed it up with the tour. I would recoment this to EVERYONE going the Seattle, Dont just go Up for the Neadle GO Down to the underground. The cost was great for what you get out of it they could charge double and I would go again.

Don't miss this!
By Dennis X, 9/9/06
I was suprised as Iam not too fond of guided tours. Paul was our guide. After some great humor just prior to the undeground tour in the staging area bar,we were led into Pioneer Square. He was thorough in explaining as to what it was we were about to do. GO UNDERGROUND!!! Literally. I do not know how you couldn't enjoy this if you are into the history of America! Sure, Seattle is "late" as far as some cities go in our history, but this is truly a gem with mold on it! Paul kept us interested every second of the tour. Amazing that this feat even pulled off regardless of the poor intial planning of Seattle in the early years! Do not miss this! If you have read about it, take the tour and learn even more. I will go again when I am in town. Just make time and go.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/5/06
Wow...I might have bashed the Tillicum Village tour but I really enjoyed this tour of Seattle. I found it entertaining and Informative but more than that, I was fascinated! If you do one tour in Seattle, take this one.

Very Pleasant Surprise
By Bill, 8/1/06
I lived in Seattle (as an adult) for 10 years, leaving 22 years ago for Salt Lake City. I never took this tour while I lived there and had very low expectations when my daughter (who still lives in this wonderful city) insisted we take the tour. It was one of the most entertaining and informative couple of hours I've ever experienced! I learned so much about the city I called home for 10 years and still love more than any other I've visited in the world (well, Istanbul is pretty nice, though, to my taste.) Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a sense of timing and humor that made me ask her if she performed on the stage (she didn't.) Pike place, the locks, yeah, nice, fun. The underground tour is a whole different thing. Unbelievably cool....take that however you want :-)

Great value!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/11/06
1.5 hours is easy to fit into a busy schedule! Compared to the cost of other attractions I felt this was the absolute best value for the money. The guides were great and it was nice to learn a little history. If you enjoy history and tongue in cheek humor and don't mind going underground you'll really enjoy this tour.

Fun Fun
By John, 4/30/06
I loved this tour, it was fun, an clever, an the guide was very charming along with tons of info on the history of Seattle. I would totally say go do this if you head to Seattle. Worth the money an time. I would also suggest buying the book at the end of the tour. One of the best books I have ever bought from a tour I have gone on. This is a must see an do!!!
