Offering scenery that rivals the remote San Juan islands without the headache of getting there, this island is well worth a visit. Less than an hour from Seattle, Whidbey is also only a short ferry trip from Port Townsend, Washington . The island is 45 miles long but a mere five miles across. With rolling farmlands, protected bays, and stunning views of the Olympic mountains, this area boasts of many recreational opportunities for cyclists, kayakers and hikers. For truly breathtaking vistas, check out Deception Pass State Park on the north end of the Island. Overnight camping is permitted in designated areas.
We enjoyed our vacations to Whidbey Island so much that we've stayed over 17 years. Whidbey Island had uncomparable beauty with water and mountain views. It had history everywhere. It had tranquility. It had forest lands, prairie land, and every kind of beach. It had recreational facilities that rivaled any place we had ever been.
Though it had the remoteness of an island, it was easily accessible. The island is dotted with inns, beds and breakfast, hotels, and motels, each with its own quaint and unique character. It has many campgrounds and some of the most beautiful and unique features in the country.
Through careful planning, the island has maintained its rural character, even with it's ever-increasing population. If you visist Washington and don't visit Whidbey Island, you've missed an opportunity for awe-inspiring experience.
Whidbey Island is absolutely gorgeous no matter what time of the year! The beauty of nature will awe you. A must to do is Deception Pass- there are places to park so you can walk around the bridge and check out the scenery of the sheer cliffs and the sound. A camera is a must! Next time I go up there, I will make an effort to picnic somewhere nearby.
