One of Tom Douglas' three booming babies, the other two being Dahlia Lounge and Palace Kitchen, this fashionable restaurant is a popular place to relax after strolling through Pike Place Market. Dark wood, brightly colored walls and large windows accent the space. Locals and tourists swarm here for seafood dishes such as Fish-and-Chips with Red Cabbage Slaw, Broiled Deep-Sea Scallops with udon noodles and lemongrass-miso broth, and Steamed Lobster. Leave room for one of Tom's renowned desserts. This smoke-free restaurant has a full bar.
Last Sunday we entertained business guests at Etta's. We had looked forward to a meal in a Tom Douglas restaurant for a long time so expectations were high.
I can't figure out just what food we are comparing here. I ordered a Thai salad with fried chicken. Apparently the oil is used for other things. It was so strong that the dipping sauce couldn't be tasted. If I had shut my eyes I would have thought we were in a fast food place. Two in our party ordered the salmon and no one finished it. It had to be sent back because the entire center of the piece was totally raw and cold. It was barely warm when served. The crab cakes were cold when served also.
The only thing that lived up to reputation was the coconut pie. I did think it was interesting to note though that the same condiments served on my salad were also served on the pie.
For a bill of nearly $300 for 6 people, we came away remembering we had a good piece of pie and a good waiter.
