When the first English colonists arrived in Jamestown in 1607, Gloucester was Virginia's political center. It was here, on the banks of the York River, that Algonquin Chief Powhatan had his stronghold and favorite home. During the colonial period, one of the first land patents in the county was issued to George Washington's grandfather in 1650. Many plantation homes remain in Gloucester and are open to the public during Historic Garden Week. Gloucester is about two hours from Richmond. Take I-64 east to Route 33. Take 33 to Route 17 to the historic district.

1 reviews for Gloucester
very nice place to visit/stay
By spitballer, 06/14/06
a very friendly place to visit, and stay. the staff at the gloucester library are outstanding, and all deserve a raise. I was stuck for a place to stay, and had my dog with me, in town for a job interview, and this staff all but dropped what they were doing to help me out, a stranger from out of town. stellar performance, but not asked for or required!!!!!!!!!!!being from ny, and after experiencing norfolk, this was like being on a different planet, a godsend, and very welcomed. highly recommended for a down home feel in todays crazed world........... 6 stars out of 5 to the staff and the locals of Gloucester, Va. from a very greatful New Yorker.
