Agecroft Hall

Description

This Tudor house once overlooked the Irwell River in Lancashire, England. It was moved, in 1929, to this site, reminiscent of the original, overlooking the James River in Richmond's Windsor Farms neighborhood. Agecroft contains furnishings dating from 1485 to 1660 including an interesting 1610 lantern clock that tells time only on the hour. Landscape artist Charles Gillette designed the gardens. They include an Elizabethan knot garden as well as one based on a pond garden at England's Hampton Court Palace.

Plan in advance!
By ,
We brought out of town relatives to Agecroft during the open hours listed on the website. We were not allowed into the house because they had school tours going on. We were told, by a less-than-friendly man that the house would remain closed for the remainder of the day due to the school tours. THERE IS NOTHING ON THE WEBSITE INDICATING THAT THEY CLOSE FOR SCHOOL TOURS. Make sure you call in advance, and don't expect a warm welcome.

What a find!
By ,
Our tour guide and all employees were wonderful! They were educated, enthusiastic and truly had pride in the entire property. We were a bit late, so two tour guides stayed on later to answer any questions that we had. A true joy and treasure for Richmond with great history and activities.

Not friendly to children
By ,
We went there this weekend expecting to have a great time. We had our 7 month old daughter with us. She did not cry once during the visit, but she did do some cooing and ocationally she laughed while on tour, but as far as we could tell she was not disturbing the others on the tour. We really could not have asked her to have behaved better, but the tour guide, in the middle of the tour singled me out, looking at me (even though my husband was holding my daughter) and asked if we would please stay a room behind for what I can only asume was too much noise. We were extremely surprised, but did as we were asked. My husband taged behind the group, and no sooner did he enter the set of bedrooms after the group, the tour guide came to me and told me to tell my husband to keep up with the group, with what I interperated as an irritating manor, not allowing my husband to see what he had missed. I was unable to understand why he seemed so irritated when my husband had for about the last 10 minutes been keeping our daughter almost completely silent. He acted like we had broken a "no children" rule, but I had seen nothing on the website or in the lobby that said anything about not allowing children inside. My husband was so upset, he didn't want to even ask for his money back, he just wanted to get our stroller and my purse/diaper bag that we had to leave in the lobby, with the ladys at the desk (they were welcomeing & sweet ladies) and leave. In all the houses that my husband and I have toured through out our lives, I have never seen or experinced such an unwelcoming tour. We were very disapointed. If our daughter had been disruptive and noisy, we would have completely understood, but it was an unrealistic expectation that we should be able to keep a 7 month old completely silent.
