The overlook, and BEAR ISLAND

Go to the park entrance, and not just at the parking lot across from Anglers Inn. There you can visit the Tavern and see photos, get maps, and read about the history. They have the canel boat and give displays of how the locks actually worked, and still do (donkeys and all). Then head down the towpath to the overlook. You will take a footbridge across a set of falls, and then meander through the woods on a wood walkway (decking) that takes you over to the big falls overlook. Watch the kayakers.
BEAR ISLAND has the Billy Goat Trail. This is a GREAT trail!!! Note: Appropriate footwear recommended, moderate rock scrambling, when trail isn't in the woods it is 'cliff-side'. Not recommended with those with knee problems, nor those with a fear of falling. Approximately 2-3 hours to complete. Stop and watch the climbers on the VA side.
Towpath is excellent for cyclist, walking the dog, or pushing the stroller!
NOTE: In really nice weather is get CROWDED go early, or go late!
