Great Falls Park
Great Falls Park, straddling both banks of the Potomac River, offers stunning views. The more attractive side of the park lies in Virginia rather than Maryland. Rushing whitewater pours through steep, jagged crevices into a narrow gorge. Photographers, hikers, and nature-lovers find much to enjoy here. The park offers many trails, and the towpath of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal parallels the river. Fishing is allowed, but only with a valid permit. Kayaking, canoing and rafting is recommended for advanced outdoors-men only. The Maryland side also features Great Falls Tavern with displays of canal history. One-hour round trip barge excursions are offered on a restored stretch of the canal from April to November.
Had great time - walking and biking trails. On the waters' edges quite relaxing and exciting next to the rushing water. They have a C&O Canal boat tour at the park up and down the lochs and concession stand. Boardwalk to the island "rock forest" to the falls. Awesome scenery for couple hour or all day venture. Take the camera.
Go to the park entrance, and not just at the parking lot across from Anglers Inn. There you can visit the Tavern and see photos, get maps, and read about the history. They have the canel boat and give displays of how the locks actually worked, and still do (donkeys and all). Then head down the towpath to the overlook. You will take a footbridge across a set of falls, and then meander through the woods on a wood walkway (decking) that takes you over to the big falls overlook. Watch the kayakers.
BEAR ISLAND has the Billy Goat Trail. This is a GREAT trail!!! Note: Appropriate footwear recommended, moderate rock scrambling, when trail isn't in the woods it is 'cliff-side'. Not recommended with those with knee problems, nor those with a fear of falling. Approximately 2-3 hours to complete. Stop and watch the climbers on the VA side.
Towpath is excellent for cyclist, walking the dog, or pushing the stroller!
NOTE: In really nice weather is get CROWDED go early, or go late!
Great Falls National Park is surprisingly interesting place, amazing how so beautiful nature spot could be located inside Metro Washington DC. Just 20 minutes drive from White House and Congress. Great Falls Park is offering great views on Potomac river squeezing between granite cliffs of Maryland and Virginia and forming beautiful waterfalls. Falls are not tall, but wide and powerful. Walking trails along Potomac river, C&O Canal, Goat Trail are awesome place for walking, hiking, biking.
