When you think of San Antonio, two things automatically come to mind: the Alamo and the River Walk. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. The city's most popular attraction, it is often crowded and filled with children, party goers, tourists and locals. In the heart of the River Walk is an area filled with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, punctuated by fountains and towering Cypress trees. The River Walk is particularly crazy during Fiesta.
The outdoor atmosphere with the river, plants, and classic old buildings is amazing. There is plenty to see and do on the riverwalk. If you like sightseeing, this is definitley the place to do it. The River Center mall is nearby for shopping, movies (check out the imax!), and etc. Old churches, historic landmarks, and villages line the riverwalk. Combined with wonderful restaurants, the riverwalk is something you can do all day.
Food and drinks are pricey, but what can one expect from a tourist attraction? You can find just about everything here--from the place on NPR ("Jazz from the Roverwalk") to the original "Coyote Ugly" bar. People are very friendly and helpful. Great nightlife and very safe, even later at night.
Loved walking the River Walk..it was very peaceful and enjoyable!! A beautiful place to visit. Even in Feb. the flowers were in bloom..you can walk and enjoy them all along the way. A very nice change from snow in Feb.
My husband and I have been to the River Walk twice and have enjoyed both times! This last time we stayed right on the river in the Hilton. When we got tired we went to our room for a rest and back down again for a little more.
