River Walk

Description

When you think of San Antonio, two things automatically come to mind: the Alamo and the River Walk. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. The city's most popular attraction, it is often crowded and filled with children, party goers, tourists and locals. In the heart of the River Walk is an area filled with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, punctuated by fountains and towering Cypress trees. The River Walk is particularly crazy during Fiesta.

The best of San Antonio
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/24/09
My husband and I visited River Walk in May 2009, We were both extremely pleased by what we found. It is an amazing place to visit and we truly enjoyed being able to walk for hours and just enjoy the beauty and tranquillity in the middle of a bustling city. We had lunch at one of the resturants along the canal, the food was excellent, the beer nice and cold and the staff very friendly and plesant and the prices were reasonable. We would highly recommend this fantastic place to everyone. It was definitely worth the time and money and is easily accessed by public transit for those who don't wish to drive. One of the very best places we visited during our vacation.

Just returned from SAT
By Christina, 5/27/09
My husband and I just returned on 5/25 from San Antonio. The Riverwalk was beautiful. We took a guided boat tour and loved it. Our guide was very friendly and entertaining. He gave us a ton of historical information that was interesting. We ate at one of the Mexican restaurants along the river which was very good. People are friendly and accommodating. Prices were fair for a tourist area. If you go to San Antonio, make sure you visit the Riverwalk!

Great romantic weekend
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/6/09
My hubby and I try to go once a year for a long wkend without the kids. We are coming from Dallas and it is a little far (almost 5 hrs) but worth it. Cute, fun and romantic. Not a lot ton to do but enought for a great wkend. I would not bring the kids (8 and 6) unless I was going to add an amusement park to the mix.

If I were a local I would spend all my time here
By Becca, 1/18/09
The Riverwalk was beautiful. Very clean a wonderful walk and boat ride. The architecture is true to the history of San Antonio. Was beautiful in the winter with all of the lights. I couldn't stop taking photos. I can't wait to go back. Didn't stop in many shops. If you like to walk and just look around is a great day for little money.

Great place to relax, eat, people watch
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/11/09
What is there not to like. They have just about everything. It is so original and you can tell the city has prided itself in providing safety and entertainment. Great for romantic couples, family and show off to people from outside the state. We live about 4 hours away and our guests and families always request to be taken to the riverwalk. No other place like it in the world ! ! It is very well worth the time and money to experience San Antonio and the Riverwalk.

We have been twice and loved it both times!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/1/08
The river walk seems more for the adult crowd. It's a place to eat, drink and relax. There is nothing for children to do and no ramps for strollers. You should know the hotels are expensive and eating and drinking on the river isn't cheep. If you can handle all that it's the most fun, most romantic and beautiful places my husband and I have been. Part of the experience is staying at a hotel as close to, or on the river as you can. We didn't notice the river being dirty with trash, actually it was very clean and well groomed for as many people that are there. Everyone was very friendly and there is a lot of history to be seen in San Antonio. Austin is about an hour and twenty minutes drive away with the famous 6th street to party on. Six Flags is maybe twenty minutes away from the riverwalk. If you do rent a car they are very proud of there parking, fifteen dollars a day. We heard of one for seven dollars a day but never found it. If you like to eat drink and be merry the river walk is the place to go, just take lots of money.

Nice little area.
By libi k, 8/17/08
This was a nice area when we were out about sight seeing. There were tons of people and you really need to pay attention to where you park. Thankfully the River Walk area has directional signs on the street posts. It is really not handicapped or stroller accessible. There is a lot of stairs so if you do not do them well you may have a hard time getting around as the one elevator we came across was out of order. The mall is great and both the Hard Rock Cafe and the Rainforest Cafe are multi level so you can access them from both street level and from the River Walk. It was a little dirty when we went.
