Steves Homestead

Description

For lovers of history, architecture and antiques, this home is a must on the sight-seeing tour. Built in 1876, this three-story Victorian French Second Empire-style home belonged to prominent citizen Edward Steve. The interior is decorated with original pieces from the era. Incidentally, the one-story River House behind the home housed the first indoor swimming pool in the city. Since 1954, the San Antonio Conservation Society has maintained the homestead as a historic house museum.

Steves Homestead
By sam, 3/11/07
The docent who lead the tour was very knowledgable and shared interesting facts about the house and the Steves family. The house is unbelievable and should be visited by anyone in San Antonio as it's just a short mile or mile and a half from the Alamo. The whole King William neighborhood is worth a visit as the houses in the area reflect a bygone era that is not seen much except for places like Natchez, Miss or Charleston, SC.

Pleasurable Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/20/06
It was an amazing experience listening to the history of this beautiful house. The tour guides are very knowledgable about the time period, Steves family and home. The $5 charge was well worth the time travel. I especially enjoyed listening how the family ordered and shipped pieces to their home. I have nothing bad to say about the visit - it was all very nice, relaxing and worth it!
