Although construction did not begin until 1749, this cathedral was established in 1731 by the Canary/Spanish Islanders, who sought to build their own place of worship. It is the oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States. The famous Alamo defender James Bowie was married here and during the siege of the Alamo Santa Anna used it as an observation post. Notable historic figures Bowie, William Travis and Davy Crockett are buried here. The cathedral still draws huge crowds for Mass and always welcomes visitors.

I Loved him so much and, I will always miss him. San Fernando Cathedral Has made a special place for me to be. May My Brother Joe Arciniega Rest in Peace. I Loved him and Miss him Dearley. The Cathedral- under construction
By JasonD, 03/30/08
San Fernando indeed peaked my interest when reading about it. However, when we went, that area was mostly under construction, so that hampered alot of the atmosphere. We did go inside the church (only one part was open to the public), and it was pretty, but from the website, I would have expected a little more. I am sure once it's 100% operational again it will be fine.

Refreshing For the Soul !
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/23/07
I love San Fernando Cathedral, I live in SA and was a parishner to SFC but during the remodel phase I got displaced and returned to my parish St Peter The Prince of The Apostle Church. The cathedral has a special spirit that only those truly sseeking God and spirtuality, will fine it here. Go to the cathedral on Sunday prior to Thanksgiving Day and see the Indians in their custumes re-act how it was then... This catheral is catholic but its for all of you, all faiths or non-believers. Come and fine God !

Beautiful Cathedral
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/04/07
The San Fernando Cathedral is beautiful. However, parking is limited because is located downtown. There are masses in Spanish and English. The Sunday morning service 8 a.m. is the best as it is bilingual and it is televised. I loved it and if you are visiting San Antonio, don't leave without visiting the Cathedral.

Excellent find
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/12/06
We just happened to be passing by and decided to stop in. It is a beautiful cathedral. I would recommend it to anyone, no matter what your faith is. (we're not Catolic). It was a great chance to show the children briefly the beautiful architure and the importance to the Catholic faith. It was quiet and cool and a great little getaway.

I would like to visit again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/15/06
It was so special for my family, my Dad and for me, my Mom's wish was to visit the Cathedral, but she was unable to visit with us. She's no longer with us but will always be with in hearts. The cathedral is so beautiful.

HistoryAndThanks
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/29/05
The cathedral was beautiful. The stained glass suberb. The historical value was just about the same as visiting the Alamo! I found the interfaith ceremony a break from the traditional catholic ceremony that I am use to, but it was appropriate for Thanksgiving Day.

A must see landmark
By Dennis D U, 10/26/05
WOW! What a beautiful Cathedral! We attended the Saturday 5:30pm Mariachi Mass. What a beautiful service. We had arrived early and a wedding was in progress. What a beautiful place to be wed. On Sunday evening there was a free symphony that was outstanding. So do check the church newsletter for other activities. It is an easy walk from the west part of the Riverwalk.

Spiritual.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/14/05
I was at the cathedral for the mariachi mass. It's in Spanish, which is fine because I'm bilingual. It was a beautiful place that offered me a deep spiritual experience.
