Good Sports specializes in all sorts of sporting equipment and accessories. You will find well-known brands and high quality products for hiking and camping, running, water and snow skiing, and cycling, to name just a few activities. Whether you need equipment, gear, clothes, shoes, boots, accessories, helmets or watches, this shop should have it. If it doesn't, the staff will find it for you.
After a trip in with the family to get equipped for a summer hiking trip to Alaska I will be forever customers. As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted (something that is a scarce thing in the city). The sales associates were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. After reading the other reviews on this site we were kind of leery of spending several hundreds of dollars in a place that has mixed reviews, but after just one visit I will be a customer for a long time. This place overall gets two thumbs up and the bad reviews must have been some bad apples they hired at some time because there is nothing else like this in the city. If you like being treated like a paying customer instead of a burden like the big box stores this place is for you. Be aware of the return policy, it is shorter than most places but it is posted several places and kind of expected in a small shop like this one.
Hi. PLEASE don't buy climbing rope or webbing from Good Sports. I was once given 40 ft. of webbing instead of the 50 ft. I asked for because the guy "didn't feel like measuring it out." If an employee is too lazy to measure they need to make sure to be generous, not short the customer.
Recently, I asked for 12 ft. of 6mm cord and was given 8 ft. I measured it carefully when I got home and was so peeved that I went back. I was treated as if I were an inconvenience for coming back, and then I was cut 11 ft. of cord as a replacement. How can you mess that up?
Also, when asking about water treatment options, I realized that the staff had no idea what they were talking about. To illustrate, I was told chlorine drops (like AquaMira) and iodine were pretty much the same, when they most definitely are not. One of the managers told me he hiked the AT in 3 months with only one set of AquaMira drops, which only treats 30 gallons of water. How do you hike 2000 miles in 3 months and only drink 30 gallons of water? Makes me think he might be lying....right?
Perhaps the employees puff up their experience to sell, sell, sell. I feel like Good Sports will probably go out of business when R.E.I. comes to San Antonio. I currently feel like it's worth the inconvenience to make my way to Austin's R.E.I. because their employees are knowledgeable (or admit to not knowing and send you to someone else) and VERY nice.
Down with Good Sports--I despise them!
I have been shopping at Good Sports for nearly ten years, and they have without a doubt the most knowledgeable staff in San Antonio. However, over the years I have had a few situations that I dealt with one of the owners named Marsha and she is consistently one of the most belittling, condescending individuals I have ever run across at a retail business. Either she has no idea how to treat a customer or she simply picks and chooses who deserves common decency...based on who knows what? But, because of their superior staff that is always helpful and friendly I will continue shopping there and avoid dealing with Marsha.
I am writing this review in response to the rediculously harsh review written below this one so, here goes...
I have traveled all over and backpacked more places than I can remember. Where ever i go i tend to look at the local outfitter to see what they offer as far as selection, quality, customer service, etc,. Now, i know that i live near the store i am reviewing, but there hasn't been a time since i started shopping there (13 years ago) that they have let me down. They are a bit on the pricy side of the fence but, what do you expect when all they sell are brands like Patagonia, The North Face, Arc'Teryx, etc... I have also had some returns on some items that didn't perform as well as they maybe should have and it has never been a major issue. I appreciate the fact that will take the time with their customers and explain details of products that is rarely found in retail today. Their staff always seem to know what they are talking about. I have, and will continue to shop their and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to all friends and family.
I used to love this sporting goods store but after the experience my wife had today, I my family can never shop their again. My wife bought a Christmas gift for my self on the 18 of December after opening the gift Christmas day discovered it was too small, when she tried to return it after Christmas discovered it was past the 7 day return window. She argued with the owner Jordan, but he was very inflexible and refused provide a refund fro the gift. I think the owner should have had a more flexible return policy around Christmas or at the vary least warned customers before the holidays of this strict policy. He said you should have read the hand written note on the counter. She was not aware of the inflexible holiday return policy if she did she would never have bought gifts at that store. I used to be supportive of local small businesses in my area but after this experience I will be wary of small businesses that do not value their customers.
Every time I go into the Good Sports store I find what I want. I like the high quality merchandise that other stores don't get in, the broad size ranges and a very genuine, helpful staff. They'll even box and wrap your gift purchase with ribbon!
I would highly recommend this store to anyone as you will always be happy with your experience as I have been.
Outstanding customer service and selection. Staff really knows their stuff! Excellent knowledge, rivaling some of the best outdoor outfitters in the mountain states. Excellent selection of gear and clothing for all levels of expertise (and budgets). The best outdoor outfitter shop in Texas.
Great customer service and a genuine care for the concern of what is in the customers price range and what the customer needs. The overall experience was painless, which is nice when you are shopping for a pair of tennis shoes and where a size 10 narrow! My family has shopped there for at least 10 years.
