This is one of San Antonio's best-known Mexican restaurants, and for good reason. Both the food and the beverages are excellent. The margaritas will knock your socks off; be sure to enjoy one on the large, shaded patio. For Mexican cuisine, La Fogata sets an excellent standard with green enchiladas and queso flameado that cannot be beat. Other specialties include the garlic-heavy pollo loco, quesadillas and chile rellenos.
The minute we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. Being native San Antonians, we know a good mexican restaurant when we see one. The ambiance was wonderful, the weather was perfect and the margaritas were excellent. Once we were seated we were impressed by the selection of plates.
Our experience with the waiter however, left a little to be desired. Ernesto was very busy, which we understood. However, it appeared to us that the table next to us was receiving his full attention. He did attend to us as he zipped by and headed to the kitchen by asking, "todo bien"? We could only respond with "si."
Once the meals arrived my son experienced a hot/spicey nacho and couldn't finish his meal as his tongue was on fire. I asked Ernesto to bring him a taco instead, but the manner in which Ernesto addressed me was unpleasant. Instead of attending to my request, he chose to argue about the nachos not being hot/spicey. He then proceeded to argue with me, and later asked me not to be angry. I was disappointed at this point after having had such a wonderful experience that evening. I hope that Ernesto will only learn and/or improve in one specific area,
"good customer service."
This is my favorite place to eat when I visit San Antonio. The food is some of the best I have ever had Mexican or otherwise. My son and I tried some of the pork dishes with red sauce. It was not for the faint of heart. Not as hot as some of the food in Santa Fe, NM but it will make you sweat. Make sure you have a designated driver and then you can use the margaritas to put out the heat. Service for each of the visits ranged from good to excellent. We try to go early and the service ranges from excellent to even better. When they are real busy the service can drop down but it is always good. Ambiance is fantastic particularly with the mariachi band. Brush up on your knowledge of mariachi music before you go and they will play just about any selection you can name. I like Alla lo rancho grande and Jalisco. Cannot say enough good things about it. I have never been disappointed.
We were in San Antonio for my son's graduation from Lackley and did not know where to go for take out. I asked our receptionist where we were staying and she suggested the La Fogata on Vance Jackson. We ordered a small variety for take out and were very impressed with the food and service, will definitelly return again.
We have been to La Fogata several times for dinner always getting the same great food and service. They always treat their customers in a warm and curtious manner. The last time there we were a group of nine celebrating my aunts 90th birthday. The normally great service was over the top for us and especially her. The food was excellent, we left there all smiles.
We just got back from visiting San Antonio, and I had researched top rated restaurants online before we left. I almost didn't pick La Fogata because of several of the negative reviews, but I am so glad that my family decided to go!!! The grounds of the restaurant are beautiful, and although we ate outside and it was a tad hot, I loved the ambiance of it all--from our adorable waiter to the Mariachi guys strolling around. We did wait on the long side for our main course (thus the '4' rating for service), but it didn't matter to us because we started with an appetizer that knocked us off our feet. My husband ordered it, so I don't recall the name, but it was a mixture of poblano peppers, onions and cheese which you eat on flour tortillas. Yummy. When our main courses came, we were not disappointed. My 3 boys, who are somewhat picky when it comes to enchiladas, said their enchilada dishes were the best they'd ever had. My Chile Poblano al Carbon was excellent. I should add that our waiter was wonderful--he kept our glasses full and was attentive throughout our meal! I will definitely go back when we are in San Antonio again!
Being from Texas I have eaten lots of Mexican food. This is, by far, the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. After eating at LaFogata everything else tastes like TV dinners. The restaurant has great ambiance including the option to eat on the patio while listening to a mariachi band or eating inside. Prices were very pleasing for the quality of food. While the restaurant is off the beaten path it is well worth the drive.
With so many fine Mexican Restaurants in San Antonio, it's hard to say which one is the best. It simply comes down to personal preference. Personally, I think La Fogata is one of the best. Good food, good service, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced. I like the fact that it's away from the tourist attractions, in a neighborhood called Dellview. I go to La Fogata everytime I'm in San Antonio and I've never been disappointed.
