A great place to worship and to be
Palmer is run by Jim Nutter, and Jim is full of energy, in the sense that a nuclear reactor is full of energy. It is very hard to attend Palmer and NOT become involved in the place. Most Churches list the different ministries they have; Palmer has a 40 page booklet. There are over 100 different opportunites to serve, and if need be, be served.
Some of these ministries are small, like Church Tours, or the C.S. Lewis Discussion Group, or Wedding Cordinator. Some are big, like the Way Station that gives free breakfast, support, administrative help, and medical care to the homeless in the area. Some are quiet, like CanCare Cancer Support Ministry, or Companions in Prayer. Some are loud like the Choirs, the Change Ringers, the Newcomers Dinners, and the MS-150 Cycling Team. My favorite is the St. Andrew's Cooking Guild that cooks for the Wednesday night fellowship dinners we have at the church.
More importantly, the people at Palmer really do BELIVE, and they walk their walk. One example of many. Our chior director (part time & not well paid) had just bought a new job interview suit. He was in this suit at a small Sunday night service when a homeless man wandered into the back of the church. Long story short, our chior director literally gave this guy the shirt off his back before the service was over.
Lastly, Palmer is located in the Houston Medical Center and Palmer Church knows that not everything in the Medical Center works out the way we want it to. Every day people from all denominations wander into the church in need of care, help, comfort and hope. Rev. Nutter sees this as one of Palmer's biggest missions, to be there for these people. Palmer has a special Medical Center Ministry that is helps coordinate access to all the various support available to Medical Center patients and their familes. Palmer has people who can listen, who can counsel, who can provide for immediate physcial needs, and even a couple of subsidized apartments available for out of towners who are at the Medical Center. If you need help, Palmer will be there for you.
