Since opening in late 1997 with musical movers and shakers from Trees, the Curtain Club has managed to become one of the premiere showcases for local rock bands. It has two club spaces, a small front room called the Liquid Lounge, open to 21+, and a performance area in the back that is open to 17+ and is rocked by a huge sound system. Each week there is a day of Acoustic Jam night in the Liquid Lounge. Everyone is invited to bring a guitar and join in the mayhem. The Liquid Lounge is home to live hip-hop on weeknights.
Curtain club has a great sound system but not much else. The facility is basically a dump, and since smoking is permitted, it makes listening to some good bands pretty difficult.
Let the smokers smoke outside and pay someone to clean the place.
$8 to get in is OK since drinks are not too expensive (mixed drink $3.75).
Also, the so-called "battle of the bands" is really a battle of which band can get more people to come to the venue and purchase tickets. The band that sells the fewest tickets goes on first, and the last band on sells the most. Given that the fans of the earlier bands have left in order to maintain their health by not breathing all the smoke, whether one wins or not has nothing to do with talent.
Hey..obviously the last reviewer does not like smoke..which is still legal in Texas..soo...
You can smoke and people do at Curtain Club because they still believe in allowing personal freedoms.
Great sound, great staff, pretty good drink prices compared to other places in this city. And one of the last places you can see your friends or locals present their own music, something that has become increasingly scarce these days.
Want to hang out at a place off the beaten path if you are visiting where locals hang out..this is where you would go.
