3 reviews for Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park
Trashy and Grim
By HansD, 07/26/09
Other than murky, muddy pond water, there is little to merit a visit. Limited trails or other activities. Trash and litter are more common than wildlife. Visitors were rowdy, loud, and cussing like sailors. It would appear this "park" was created to balance out the power plant. It is more like wasteland with an admission fee. Don't bother.

Experiences here are variable.

I was a visitor to Austin just looking for things to do when I went to this park. I didn't have a pass or any money with me and the attendant was very gracious to let me explore the park anyway. At the time I was there there was hardly anything to do except fish which I wasn't prepared for so I just hiked as far as I could on the few pathways and left. There were few people there so it was very quiet but judging from the surrounding area I wouldn't hesitate to guess that if the people who lived there visited the park they wouldn't treat it any better than their own property which was, shall we say, filthy and cluttered. I can attest to the fact that there was a lot of trash and litter scattered everywhere along the foot paths I walked. Pretty typical of people who have no respect for anyones property and think nothing of despoiling every place they visit. I will be going back for another visit and will post futher reviews if the situation has changed.

Nice Park, Rude Visitors
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/07/06
The park consists of the bank area next to Walter E. Long Lake.It looks nice and clean plus there's a canoe rental place setup sometimes. Walter E. Long Lake is supposedly a good "fishing" and there's a bait&tackle right outside the park gates. However, on the weekends at 11am the "normal" visitors of the park arrive and from my experience are quite rude. I don't mind sharing the bank if people want to swim, while I'm trying to fish, but they literally drop their stuff next to mine and start swimming in front of me. I would move and then another unaffiliated group from before would do the exact same thing(one guy even asked me to move the fishing line so his kids wouldn't trip on it). On my day there, someone parked their pickup on the grass next to the bank and was blasting mexican music onto their picnic table and essentially saturating the area with loud music. On top of that, there was alot of swearing from the groups of swimmers (there was no argument that I could see, just swearing), some of it was in english and some of it was in spanish, but they would yell it loudly at the people on the bank. If you want to fish at the park get there early so you can leave before all the rucus starts. If you want a nice day at the park and don't mind alot of noise it's quite nice plus there's a small volleyball pit. There's also a boat ramp to get out onto the lake.
