Northcross Mall

Description

Consider this north Austin mall as an alternative to the colder, more impersonal mega-malls that have become standard in recent years. This shopping center is a bit cozier, with some unusual finds inside. Despite its smaller size, shoppers will still be able to browse department stores like Oshman's and Bealls, or catch a movie at the resident theater. In addition, the mall offers the only ice skating rink in town, and is home to specialty shops such as Gamefellas, Lammes Candies, and Guitar Center, as well as the Museum of Fine Arts.

RIP Northcross Mall
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/5/11
Northcross Mall used to be real popular. Now, the only interesting thing there is the ice rink. I liked going there when they had the movie theater, Furr's Cafeteria, the food court. The current Northcross Mall is dead.

Nothing lasts forever...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/18/10
This is where I got my first job, as a young adult. Used to work on one of the food vendors, kiosks that surrunded the ice rink in 1980. Called Sweet Thang. I made the fresh baked cookies, and squeezed lemonade for the place, and the Dog Stop stands throughout Austin. This is where I learned to ice skate. Lots of fond memories there. I was a military brat, and when I graduated in '81, I left Austin forever. Looking back, the place then was well run, and was very contemporary. Even then, all the store spaces were not completely filled. It was huge, and rambling, and just a beautiful place to walk, and enjoy the athmosphere. I am very sorry to hear, it was not managed well, in the end. But, I will tell you, the people who built this mall, and ran it, were top notch in the day. It just goes to show you, that businesses are people, and they are run and built up by people. So, the place is gone, and so are the people who ran it. Now, instead of a place where a small business owner can get a start, you get the box stores, that have everything. You lost a place where you could skate, and shop, and hang out with friends, and family. For the typical wal-mart. Just goes to show, that this country is going to the dogs. Well, I had my fun there. I was there, and now you have a piece of empty land. Hopes and dreams of the past have faded, and you get the box. If it hasn't been built already. I would have driven from where I live, anywhere in the country to visit your mall. Now, I can go down the block, here in Missouri, and go to wal-mart. So, who is the loser now?

My childhood days
By SandraG, 12/20/08
The mall was so awesome back when I was a kid, everything was there...the Furr's cafeteria, The shoe store next to it, and even the movie theater. After a while, places started to close down, and then when we went in the evening for dinner at Furr's we were all disappointed to see it had been shut-down. I actually work down at a small clothing store passing Northcross Mall, and to see it torn down...it just kind of puts a hole in your inner child's heart.

Good Old Days
By carolyns, 7/10/07
When i was little we used to visit austin every summer and stay in Northpark Hotel ( now the northcros hotel) during the days we would go to the mall and watch ice skater or paint at the ceramic place or just shop. At nights we would go and eat at furrs. I hadn't been here is serveral years. This year i got a chance to come back and was quite excited about going to the mall agian. After just being there and planning on seeing a movi I was very disapointed. The mall seems run down. There was nothing there like it used to be except the skating rink and even that didn't seem like it was as nice as it used to be. I don't think i will ever go back...just remember the times i used to go there...

I love Northcross Mall
By CHRIS, 4/11/06
Back in the early 90's, this Mall was very busy. It had a great food court, stores were full of people and they had a decent movie theater. Something happened around 1998-1999 and whoever bought out this Mall did a terrible job of managing it. The tenant stores left in droves, the theater shut down and was turned into a horrid convention center used by the local city government for jury duty selections. It is a shell of a mall now with only the skating rink, Bealls and Oshman's keeping it afloat (in my opinion) I just read an article about how another group of developers have purchased the Mall and have plans to completely renovate it with new building projects, etc. I hope to once again see a thriving Northcross Mall as a center hub for a great shopping area.

Ice rink dilemma.
By Kate, 11/21/05
The Northcross rink is ok for public skating but for serious or recreational competitors it is useless, due to not enough freestyle sessions and the ice is not regulation size; therefore, neither major figure skating competitions nor hockey games can be held there. Chaparral Ice at I-35 is regulation size and does have early morning freestyle sessions but no afternoon sessions and very few public sessions. If you are a parent who leaves work at 5pm and wants to take their child to the I-35 location to have a lesson or to practice you are out of luck.

Great and convenient!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/05
Northcross Mall is were I plan to do a lot of my Christmas shopping! You can actually get into the Christmas spirit more just because it isn't over crowded. I hate crowds and waitng in line. They have parking galore! You can get good products and prices. No they don't have the biggest selection but that trade off, the atmosphere and convenience make it worth it to me. The big plus for WALKERS! You can get your walking in. It's safe, cool, dry, has good hours and it's convenient!!!

one of the worst malls on the us
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/20/05
one of the only reasons to go to northcross is the ice skating rink. nothing in the mall, nobody to see. i cant even find a reason why its still there. dont waste your time by going. after the 80s the mall fell apart. it is also small in size.
