Rock and Soul Museum
Elvis, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Stax Records, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, all called Memphis home. So, the river city is a natural choice for this museum. Highlights of the museum's permanent collection include several Elvis costumes, B.B. King's guitar (affectionately called "Lucille" by the legendary bluesman) and Dick Clark's American Bandstand podium. The museum also offers special displays, such as the current "Rock 'n' Soul: Social Crossroads" exhibit on loan from the Smithsonian Institute.
Get the portable player and let it guide you through time. You walk through great exhibits from historical times and places relating to the Iconic figures from Soul and Rock history while listening to what is probably the greatest collection of music anywhere. It would cost 10 grand to collect the tracks, if you can find them. Very well done.
A warning to head bangers, If you don't like any music older than Sting, don't bother.
While on a business trip in Memphis, I visit the National Civil Rights Museum and the Rock and Soul Museum. The Rock and Soul Museum did a fabulous job on documentary the origins of the Rock and Soul. The displays, the music, the film, were all top notch.
I spent about three hours in the museum and enjoy every minute. I loved on certain display that I could enjoy the music from that era. Also, with the location near Beale Street, you could spend an entire day between both locations.
I would visit the Stax Record Museum again. Not only hearing the old music and sound was good but, just to see some of the artist on old album covers and to hear some express this great era in the 60's. This music was from the soul.
