Lichterman Nature Center
Raccoons wander freely around this nature preserve and educational facility. The Lichterman family after whom the center is named willed their land to the city years ago, and portions of the block have since been developed into a shopping center, St. Francis Hospital and an apartment building. However, this 65-acre park still provides sanctuary for local wildlife. Children can see here how injured animals are treated and prepared for return to the wild. While the original Lichterman home that housed exhibits and administrative offices burned down a few years ago, most of the facility has been restored.
The center is great for learning about nature. It has some live animals in aquariums such as snakes, turtles, insects, etc. These are to show what can be seen in nature. Fish can be viewed by looking into the small pool where they live or through the glass on the side where they can be viewed underwater. The trails are a good walk through the trees and by the lake. If you throw the food that they have in the water, the turtles will swim over to eat it as do the fish. If the geese or ducks are there, they will eat it also. These as well as water birds are basically the only animals that you will see when visiting the nature center as it is not a zoo. It is more for teaching about nature and how animals and man interact in nature. My 5 year old daughter loves to visit. She said that she likes it as much as going to the zoo. The ladies working at the front desk were very nice and also very helpful as to what the nature center provides for visitors there.
My husband and I went there thinking they had wildlife to view. We were so disappointed. We paid to just take a walk through the woods. It was not at all what I expected. The lady at the front desk wasn't very helpful at all.
