Otherlands Coffee Bar & Exotic Gifts
Relax, listen to music and have a cup of coffee. This funky little gift shop/coffee bar is a fun place to have a snack, browse for gifts and enjoy yourself. In the coffee bar you will find java, organic teas and homemade soups. The gift shop specializes in the works of local artists making it a great place to find an original gift. Local musicians perform here on Saturday evenings. The shop is easy to spot with its blue exterior and huge white-lettered name on the front.
The atmosphere is very artistic and laid back, and it is always a breath of fresh air and a unique place to take friends. However, each time I have been on and off for about 8 YEARS, the people and particularly the employees have been very rude. I am always greeted with indifference or jaded, empty glares. Perhaps it is the way irregulars are treated, but it really makes the place unwelcoming and awkward.
The atmosphere was great, but everything else was average. The baristas didn't smile or say hi once. I also had a conversation with the manager who came off as rude and self centered. I'd go back if I was in the area, but will not make a special trip just to go there.
I love the SOHO feel about the coffee shop - the everything bagel was my favorite. But the friendly little coffee shop in the heart of midtown is like a welcome mistress for my husband. After a long day at the Zoo ( where he works) he always stops in for a cup of coffee and a plate full of atmosphere to unwind and think the last of his deep thoughts before coming home to me. He arrives home refreshed and relaxed - ready to spend a quiet evening with me and the dogs.
To me coffee is coffee but Otherlands is like therapy.
This coffee shop is the best in Memphis!! I now reside in Miami. But I tell everyone I meet that if they ever in the Memphis area, don't just go to Elvis Presley house. This coffee shop will take you on a journey to another world. And if you should stop by please tell Gerise I still love her...
Rita & Oneida
as a cooper young and midtown memphis dweller, otherlands opitimizes the midtown experience and feel. Their eclectic tastes in decor combined with their huge spetrum of regulars makes this one of the hippest places in memphis. The commoner tends to be younger, but there is no age limit to the crowd. Wireless internet is available as well. You often walk in to see college students working on their laptops drinking coffee. The bagel sandwich thing (yes, thats what it's called) is great ( I suggest it on a plain bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese and "special sauce") They also have great gifts, all of which are one of a kind items. In addition, they are one of the only sellers of the "midtown is memphis" bumper sticker, which dominates cars all over the region. Its a great place!
Great coffee, good food, hippie atmosphere where you can relax and stay awhile. (the wireless service helps too)Definitely try the tuna salad on sourdough. Hang out on the patio, or maybe check out live music when its available. A great place to study and be supportive of the midtown business community.
