Charleston's Pirates & Buccaneers
This excursion is presented by The Original Charleston Walks and takes you on a guided tour of The Walled City, Pirate Tavern, and more. In your imagination, you will travel back in time to 1718 when Charleston regularly battled the French, Spanish, and Native Americans. Now the city must face another terror from the sea. The tour departs from 45 South Market Street (Market and State Streets) and includes admission into the Old Provost Dungeon. Reservations are required and the tour mainly caters to large groups. Call for tour hours, tour rates and more information.
Our wonderful guide was Brian McCreight. This man was not only very knowledgeable and compelling in his tales, but provided me with the answer to a question that has gone unanswered for me for decades. My question was "What happened to Anne Bonny?" I never had to ask the question, by the way, because this guy was THAT good. We also got to see the Exchange Building, Provost Dungeon, some of Charleston Waterfront Park, and the Pink House (a well-known tavern in the old days.)
I could have taken many more photos but totally forgot that I even had a camera through most of the time on the tour because I was so drawn in to the stories. It was certainly great to hear the real facts behind glamorized Hollywood tales!
